Department of Philosophy


The Department of Philosophy with its intellectual contribution and community service has its unique presence in society.Its origin is connected with the inception of the college in 1970, offeringan Under Graduate Philosophy Programme.It upgraded itself in 1986 into a Postgraduate department. The department is endowed with renowned faculty who have profound academic and research experience in imparting socially relevant philosophical education. It also offers Certificate Courses in Religious Studies. Research Guides areavailable for the doctoral programme in philosophy under Madurai Kamaraj University.

The department inculcates integral and holistic formation on the basis of a comprehensive curriculumin the Philosophical, Socio-Political, Psychological, and Religious areas. The curriculum is on par with the syllabi of the universities and appropriately flavoured with the religious and ecclesiastical perceptions. It covers both Indian and Western philosophical and religious traditions. The department is coping with curricular developments and academic standards by periodically updating the syllabi. In 2019, the department introduced the Outcome-Based Education with measurable parameters for evaluating teaching quality, levels of learning, and curricular expectations.

UG students of the department can choose any one of the languages from Tamil, Hindi or French as Part- I language. Advanced learners have the facility to earn extra credits through the study of Self-Learning Courses. Career Oriented, Skill Development and other Certificate programmes are available as value added courses.

The department follows conventional and innovative teaching-learning and evaluative methodologies for the effective teaching communication, participative and interactive learning, and comprehensive and creative learning outcome. As part of the integral formation, the department caters to the holistic development of the students by arranging curricular and extracurricular orientation and activities. Community services and village exposure programmes that the students are involving during their holidays are incorporated into their contextual learning process.

The department enjoys a number of best practices and special academic activities for enhancing student's learning and experience. Students are encouraged to participate in cultural activities and sports and games; thereby they actively participate in the competitions and bring laurels. Multi-cultural and multi-linguistic presence of students widens the outlook of students. Eligible students can avail government scholarship to meet their educational expenses.

Workshop in Research Methodology for the students of philosophy (both UG and PG) to initiate them to write papers and assignments in a scientific manner.
Basic Sanskrit language course for fresher to facilitate understanding the fundamentals of Indian Philosophy.
Presentation of scientific papers in the Philosophy Association meetings to enhance students' inclination to higher learning.
Faculty Seminar to keep the research aptitude of the faculty alive and to encourage the students to imbibe research aptitude.
Peer learning is encouraged through group discussions, group assignments, and sharing of notes prepared by different students.

Comprehensive Understanding of Philosophy at the end of the UG Programme to ensure analytical, critical, and innovative skills by integrating major concepts studied in the three years, and to demonstrate the comprehensive proficiency in Philosophy through viva-voce and online written examinations with multiple choice questions.
