ENGLISH

About the Department

The Department of English was founded to teach part II English from the day of inception in 1970. When the college became autonomous in 1987 the department had the opportunity to exercise a variety of approaches and techniques in order to train the students to become fluent in English, as well knowledgeable in their respective disciplines besides inspiring them ethically and preparing them career-oriented. In 2011 B. A. English Literature course was introduced in the self-financed stream as it was the felt need of the people of the vicinity.

To make learning experience pleasant and to fulfill the rising demands and expectations of the learners with diverse interests, the department has introduced two different streams and has made the syllabi appropriate for their proficiency level. The Text Books prepared by the staff of the department contain meaningful exercises to promote classroom interactions and make the learners efficient communicators, besides enriching their creative and critical acumen.

Activities

  • Bridge cum Remedial Programme is offered to all I UG students in the first semester to nurture communication and soft skills. Apart from conventional methods of classroom teaching, the facilitators employ a range of novel methods to enhance their talents and skills. Thus, at the end of this course the students gain considerable improvement in rhetoric.
  • Theatre Fest organized annually encourages students of all disciplines to show their skill on the stage. It is educative, inspirational, motivating event. This programme provides the youngsters with unique opportunities to develop clear speech, fluent delivery and pleasing social skills.
  • SPEAKPARK is a weekly programme held to promote the English speaking skills of the students by providing a public platform. It helps them pick up voice modulation and body movements in addition to oratory.
  • WORDS-WORTH is displayed on the notice board regularly to build up the vocabulary store of the students.
  • Adequate care and concern is shown to the students who need special coaching to cope with his /her companions. The department makes exceptional efforts to sharpen their skills.

HISTORY

About the Department

The UG Department of History was started in 1980. It has a unique course structure that aims to give employability to the students. It?s syllabi focuses on promoting the skills needed for attending competitive examinationss like civil services, TNPSC Group I and II and entrance rest for higher studies etc., The Department also conducts an UGC sponsored Career Oriented Certificate Course on Tourism and Hospitality Management in the afternoon. The Alumni of the Department have been placed well in departments like Law and Order, Defence, Teaching, Education, Administration and in the fields of Art and Culture, Management etc.,

ECONOMICS

About the Department

The Department of Economics is as old as the college itself. The Department was started in the year 1970 and offers Economics at the UG, PG, M.Phil and Ph.D. levels. It is a renowned department in Arul Anandar College. The UG Programme was started in 1970-71 and it was promoted as a post graduate department in the year 1984-85. The M.Phil. programme was started in 1990-91. Recognizing the renowned works of the Department, Madurai Kamaraj University had the pleasure of upgrading the Department as Research Centre in 2001-02.

It is significant to point out that the departemnt has produced more 29 Ph.D. degree awardees and at present 33 Ph.D. scholars are pursuing their Ph.D. programme. Most of the faculty members of the department are Ph.D. holders and among them 6 are guiding Ph.D. scholars.

The department of Economics does not limit itself to classroom teaching alone. It organizes Seminars, Workshops, and Conferences on matters of economic significance. The faculty members have completed 6 minor projects and 2 major projects which were funded by UGC, ICSSR and MIDS. The faculty members have written many text books to their credit and published articles in national and international journals.

PHILOSOPHY

Vision

Integral Formation for Social Transformation through Philosophy and Research Communication

The Department of Philosophy is an integral unit of Arul Anandar College (Autonomous), founded in 1970, upgraded to Autonomous Status in 1987 and is endowed with profound Academic and Research Experience in imparting socially relevant Philosophical education. The history of the Department of Philosophy coincides with the history of the college. Along with the educational experience of the college, the department has four decades of educational experience in providing integral formation.

Graduate Programme: Both undergraduate (BA) and post graduate (MA) courses in Philosophy are offered. The graduate programme prepares to pursue Ph. D and relevant higher educational and ecclesiastical pursuits in social and religious studies at National and International levels. Tamil, Hindi, French and Communicative English are the language courses available at the UG level.

Research: Ph. D (Part-time) research programme is offered in Philosophy, Psychology and World Religions. Students with proven ability to serious research pursuits are encouraged to undertake PhD research. Right now Dr. S. Lourdunathan and Dr. George Joseph serve as research guide at the department.

Multi-Cultural Learning Experience: Students at the department hail from different States of India and Sri Lanka hence gifted with a diversity of cross-cultural learning experience.

Alumni Placements: Our Alumni are at National and International Community Services as Social Animators, Counsellors, and Educational cum Pastoral Professionals.

MATHEMATICS

The Department of Mathematics was established in 1970 along with the inception of the College. The establishment of the Department was mainly for the then Pre-University Course with Mathematics as one of the subjects.

In the year 1971, the Department introduced a three year B.Sc. Degree Program in Mathematics due to the great demand for Mathematics Graduates. The Department has grown itself as one of the leading Departments in Arul Anandar College.

From the academic year 2004- 2005 onwards, one more section under Self-Financed stream was introduced taking into account the heavy demand for Mathematics Major. The program was offered in the afternoon. From the academic year 2012-2013 onwards, the program is offered during the morning session itself.

Both the programs are offered under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)

In addition to the regular courses like Calculus, Algebra, Trigonometry, Analysis, Differential Equations, Sequences and Series, Astronomy, the curriculum includes applied areas like Graph Theory, Operations Research, and Discrete Mathematics. The program also includes Programming Languages C++ and Java.

The Department also offers Allied Mathematics for B.Sc. Physics and Chemistry Major Students.

From the academic year 2005- 2006, the Department has introduced a two year M.Sc. Mathematics Degree program mainly to cater the needs of the rural boys and girls of this socially backward area. The Department has grown into a Post-Graduate Department. This program is also offered under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) The curriculum is designed in such a way that the students are exposed to the latest trends in higher Mathematics. The program also meets the aspirations of those who want to pursue research program in Mathematics.

Apart from usual teaching method like chalk and talk, novel teaching methods like power point presentations, group discussions, peer group interactions, seminars, guest lectures by experts in the field, net based assignments are followed for enhancement of teaching-learning process.

PHYSICS

About the Department

The Department of Physics was established in the year 1971,offering physics as ancillary subject,for other science major students and upgraded as a major department from the year 1988. At present B.Sc degree programme in Physics is offered under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). M.Sc. programme in Physics was started in the year 2005, also in the CBCS pattern. In addition to the traditional core papers in Physics, the curriculum includes papers in the latest thrust areas like Medical Physics, Astrophysics, Information Technology, Electric Principles and applications, Energy Physics, Space Physics, Photonics, Non- Destructive Testing and Stellar Physics. The staff members are specialized in various fields like Photonics, Polymer Physics, Photoacoustic Spectroscopy, Astrophysics, Nano science and Technology, Energy and Environmental Physics. The physics lab is equipped with advanced equipments like Dip coating unit, Ultrasonic interferometer, Photo acoustic spectrometer and Polymeric nano material synthesizer which will be of much useful to the research scholars.Our staff members are sanctioned with both minor and major projects from UGC and DAE. Our staff also guide scholars for pursuing Ph.D Programme under part time. Students are encouraged to participate in summer/winter school programmes and training courses at IGCAR Kalpakkam, Indian Institute of Geomagnetism Tirunelveli, Kodaikannal Observatory, and Radio Astronomy Centre Ooty. Every year the department conducts Intercollegiate Seminars and Competitions to enhance the knowledge of the students and to bring out the hidden skills in them.

The students are also encouraged to participate in the Seminars and Competitions conducted by other colleges in and around Madurai. The final year students of both U.G & P.G have a chance to visit the reputed research institutes and places of scientific importance. The Department also takes care of the students by offering them Career guidance and Counselling.

CHEMISTRY

About the Department

  1. The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1971 and B.Sc degree programme in Chemistry was started in the year 1979.

  2. The Department is offering a three year degree programme in Chemistry under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), with Physics and Mathematics/Food Chemistry as allied courses.

  3. In addition to the regular Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry, the curriculum includes papers in thrust areas like Green Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry and Polymer Chemistry.

  4. The Department also offers Career Oriented Certificate Course in Clinical Nutrition and Laboratory Technology for the under graduate students. The Department uses computer programmes extensively for teaching.

  5. The Department conducts Intercollegiate Seminars and Competitions every year to enhance the knowledge of the students and to bring out the hidden skills in them.

RURAL DEVELOPMENT SCIENCE

About the Department

The base of this academic programme is built on a firm but radical pedagogic premise of `Taking University Education towards Villages`- Taking cognizance of the appalling poverty, socio-cultural ills, deprivations of educational opportunities that plagued the poor in the Usilampatti taluk of Madurai District, the then college administration contemplated a socially relevant, people-centred and multi-disciplinary academic programme with the aim of creating catalysts of social change. With the due approval from the then Madurai University, the B.Sc. Rural Development Science had its humble beginning in 1973 at Arul Anandar College. Responding to the signs of the times the course has been elevated to M.Sc. level in 1983 and the Department became an approved centre for research in 2001.

    Rural Development Science aims at bringing the benefits of higher education to the service of villages.     Besides imparting theoretical knowledge to the students at UG and PG levels, they are also given sufficient on and off campus training programme to enhance their professional qualities so as to help the people to improve their socio-economic and political conditions. Well equipped laboratory, agricultural farm, model poultry farm, dairy farm and piggery farm on the campus help the students acquire technical skills. Placement in community based organizations, block placement programmes are given as off campus training.

    Strategies

    1. Bridge Course for the freshers ( I year students)
      The Bridge Course serves to bridge the gap between the school and college ambience. Students who hail from rural background find it difficult to cope with the new environment where they have to learn all the subjects in the medium of English. So this course prepares the learners to be competent and to face this language crisis with confidence.
    2. Theatre Fest
      The Theatre Fest ? an inter-departmental English drama competition has been conducted annually by the department for the past five years. It facilitates to acquaint the learners with the essential language skills, communicative skills and theatrical skills and to expose them to the field of drama and theatre and to bring out their dormant talents.
    3. BELL Association
      As a ?beyond scholarly activity,? a variety of competitions are organized and conducted for the English Literature students by the department Association - Britto English Language and Literary Association - to showcase and hone the innate talents and latent skills of the students. It creates a platform for them to be aware of their talents to do better and make them to become the best.
    4. Remedial classes
      Remedial classes help the students to clear their arrear papers. Special attention is paid for the slow learners that help them cope with the curriculum.
    5. Walking the extra mile
      Self-learning papers are optional papers with extra credits (3) offered to the talented students who have secured minimum 60% in the major papers, in order to develop themselves and specialize in language and literature. They will be learnt by the students of their own under the guidance of the course teacher.
    6. Language lab
      Language laboratory is an audio-visual installation used as an aid in modern language teaching available to the learner with ITC facility to provide conversational practice, listening and reading comprehensions. It is designed to strengthen the soft and communicative skills of the learners.
    7. Audio-Visual lab
      The interesting power point presentations and visual representations of the novels, dramas and stories, prune and enhance the listening skill of the learner and drive home effectively what is taught.
    8. Guidance for Competitive Examinations
      The department provides guidance and assists the learner to get through the Competitive Examinations successfully and prepares the learner to meet the competitive world and enabling them to get governmental jobs.
    9. Guest Lectures
      Guest Lectures are arranged to instruct and to inform the students and to introduce them to the world literatures, the English Language and Indian Writing in English and various topics. These lectures enable them to appreciate and relish literature studies.
    10. Seminars
      A committee has been set up to explore the possibility of conducting a National, if possible an International seminar cum workshop and categorically mobilize funds and resources.
    11. Educational field trips and tour
      An annual Educational field trip is arranged for the II year students to experience the five lands (Kurinji, Mullai, Marutham, Neythal and Palai) of Tamil Culture. A three day educational historical tour will be arranged for all the outgoing students.
    12. Inter-departmental collaboration
      Inter-departmental collaboration for English Language teaching, communicative and soft skills for the P.G. and outgoing students is planned.

    BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

    About the Department

    Department of Business Administration offers a three year bachelor degree in Business Administration and provides a professional training needed for vocational endorsement. The department had a humble beginning in the year 2002. The primary mission of the department is to educate students through interactive classes where they can learn, acquire skills and form attitudes and values appropriate for managerial and professional careers in business, industry and the Government.

    Students are given the opportunity to undergo training for a period of 30 days at the end of 4th semester to various institutions. It enables students to gain practical knowledge about industrial practices. At the end of 6th semester,they are assigned to do project work which facilitates them to acquire knowledge on research.The course provides the students the opportunity to go forward in the broadest range of professional directions and build sound and rewarding careers to compete effectively in today`s fast paced world and that are valued by society.

    The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program started in the accedemic year 2011-2012, affiliated by Madurai Kamaraj University.     About the Department

    The department B.sc Information Technology & Management is introduced in 2002. The introduction of Choice Based Credit System was started in 2003 and new pattern of CBCS was extended in 2008.

    The department motivates the students to become software professionals, Human Resource Manager, Chartered Accountant, Team Leader, Programmer, Marketing and Business Executives.

    The department has been updating the syllabi at regular intervals to the current scenario. The department of IT & M provides chalk & talk method, OHP Presentation, Power Point Presentation and Audio Visual Communication.

    About the Department

    The Department of Physical Education was started in 2004-2005. It is a unique course and structure that aims to develop the sports skills and to give employability to the students after their professional studies in B.P.Ed. and M.P.Ed.

    The students are trained in such way that they are prepared to join uniform services while they are doing their studies.

    The students are also taught in yoga, fitness, first aid and injury management and sports physiotherapy which enable them to be instructors in various clubs and clinics.
